UNEP World Environment Day

World Environment Day (World Environment Day) is June 5th each year.

In June 5, 1972, the United Nations Conference on human environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference adopted the Declaration on human environment, and put forward that the year June 5th will be designated as "World Environment Day".

In October of that year, the twenty-seventh United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution.

The establishment of the world environment day is to remind the world to pay attention to the harm of the earth's condition and human activities to the environment, reflect the people's understanding and attitude towards the environmental problems in the world, and express our humanity's yearning for and pursuit of the beautiful environment.

World Environment Day is one of the major media for the United Nations to promote global environmental awareness, enhance government's attention to environmental issues and take actions.

The United Nations system and governments carry out various activities every year on June 5th to publicize and emphasize the importance of protecting and improving the human environment.

Since 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme has chosen a member country to hold "World Environment Day" commemorative activities every year in June 5th, published the annual report on the status of the environment and commended the "500 best in the world", and formulated the theme of "World Environment Day" on the basis of the major environmental problems and environmental hot spots of the world.

The theme of "World Environment Day" in 2010 is "Many Species. One Planet. One Future", which is highly consistent with the United Nations World biodiversity year designated by the United Nations this year, which fully reflects the importance of the world's protection of endangered species.
